Banned from Rotherham

This article....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1067275/Jamie-Oliver-cooks-storm-portraying-town-dumbos.html

is about Jamie Oliver upsetting the folk of Rotherham, South Yorkshire....which happens to be right next to where I am originally from....Sheffield. Jamie has upset Rotherhamers as they feel his recent program paints their town in a poor light. He has filmed mothers who do not know how to cook and feed their kids on take-aways and chocolate, even one woman who didn't know when water was boiling.

Here are some comments left about the article....

You can not portray what is not there. Take a look in the mirror people.

I know you shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush, but I know someone from Rotherham and I agree with Jamie!

Sometime the truth hurts. how someone can only live on junk food is hard to believe. What of the future for the the children being raised like this but as shown its happening ,Cooking lessons have been stopped in schools, but still no excuse for mother's to behave like this.

It looks to me like he hand-picked the people he thought would benefit from learning to cook! Yes, it made them look bad - because it's a bad situation to be in.

Having lived in Rotherham I must say that I have to agree with Jamie. Of course they aren't all like that, but the MAJORITY are - go and have a look!

Here's one of the few people trying to make this country better. Just an idea, why don't we support and follow his example!!

Jamie Oliver is absolutely right! he probably said those words to shake them up! The truth is that these people are so lazy (hence the fact that the majority of them are on benefits), too lazy to work, let alone to cook! I am honestly disgusted and I feel so sorry for those poor children who have being fed junk since the day they were born!

Strikes me that most of the people seen just don't want to make the effort, and would prefer an easy life without having to make any attempt at helping themselves. Money seems to be frittered away; along with their lives.

Well, I was born and lived most of my life in Rotherham and I visit there frequently. TBH I'm not surprised by what was shown on TV. My relatives still live there and, whilst not as bad as some of those on the program, they eat very badly. It's all about opening a packet and eating it on front of the TV. Sorry, but it's true and something needs to be done about it before the UK become as obese as the Americans. Keep it up, Jamie.

I was born and bred in Rotherham and I have to say that this is what some parts of the town and surrounding areas are like and have always been like. I sometimes shudder when I see programmes like this though as the town has gotten worse in recent times (like many areas in the UK) and it at times unrecognisable from the place I grew up in. The town was once a proud steelworking and coal mining town and the majority of this has gone so what are you left with? Low morale, low self esteem, low wages (or benefits), lack of self interest and this is passed on from generation to generation. I'm not making excuses here as I do believe that more of an effort can and should be made (Lidl and Aldi were mentioned) and the people like this need to take a good look at what legacy they are giving to their children.

And one of the many defenders...

Has Jamie ever considered that most of us aren't millionaires, and in point of fact in low income areas where many families work different work patterns, takeaway food is sometimes the only option for parents who dont have the time or the income to purchase his "pucker" money making foodlines.

Inverted snobbery gallore!

Britain is getting so out of touch with reality, soon this will happen...

'You have pooh on your shoes. Please wipe them.'

'No I don't! How dare you say I have pooh on my shoes? What are you implying?'

I have been to Rotherham many times over a very long time scale and, to be honest, the place is a shit hole and the people are generally over weight and extremely unhealthy looking, the food establishments on offer are not what a health fanatic would be impressed with and there is a smell of chip fat wafting about more often than not. Now did I say all people from Rotherham are overweight, extremely unhealthy and living in Rotherham, a place which is wholly horrible? No but that is how interpretations are in Britain. No longer can you say the truth without it offending shed loads of people and inspiring the defense of a great many more.

There is a far greater sin in Britain than feeding your kids crap day after day when it is perfectly possible to feed them on apples, brown bread, tuna and lettuce.

Telling the truth is indefensible in Britain and people will stake their lives on that fact. People who eat crap and feed their kids crap all the time will defend to the hilt their lives and not want anyone snooping around telling them what to do because they like eating crap, they like being lazy slobs and do not want to stop being fat, lazy crap eaters even when stopping might prevent their own kids from dying young.

Reality checks needed Rotherham.

In defence of Rotherhamers....I mostly blame the demise of the steel trade, the manufacturing industry and mining in Britain for the collapse of working class family values, including food, but they do have the power to remedy things.

p.s. does anyone know the story about the King who threatened to kill the man who ever informed him of his horse's death? I can't remember the details...
